Microsoft Ignite 2016 - Must See Sessions for Office 365 & SharePoint Security

Welcome to Microsoft Ignite 2016 in Atlanta Georgia!
This year's conference will once again be full of great content and great speakers about the Microsoft solutions that we all work with.  Myself, I tend to be interested in more technical content about SharePoint Server, SharePoint Online and the Office 365 service.  It looks like the session line up won't disappoint!

As my work tends to focus on security, information protection, information governance and identity management, my conference session schedule tends to focus on technical sessions related to these topics.  Here are my MUST SEE session picks for this week.

Sunday, September 27

Pre-Conference All Day Session: SharePoint Server 2016 Upgrade and Operations Deep Dive
Session link: https://myignite.microsoft.com/sessions/7871?source=schedule
B302 - B303, 9:00am - 5:00pm
SharePoint Server 2016 is the newest member of the SharePoint family and the first in a new generation of SharePoint.  This pre-day session provides end-to-end instruction on what’s new in SharePoint Server 2016, deployment and implementation, upgrade, and operational management of SharePoint Server 2016.

I attended this all day session yesterday.  It was absolutely exhausting, but excellent - it was full of great speakers with great technical content about how to upgrade your environment to SharePoint 2016 and how to operate it.  I especially liked seeing a live demo of zero downtime patching, and hearing from Microsoft how exactly to orchestrate a zero downtime patch deployment.

Office 365 Groups is the first application to exploit the unique collaboration fabric that exists within Office 365. Drawing from Azure Active Directory, Exchange, and SharePoint and more, Groups provide a compelling way for users to share information and work collaboratively. However, like any solution, you’re not going to be successful unless you put some work in to understand how Groups work, how to implement and govern their use. This session combines the wit and wisdom of two well-known MVPs to lay out a practical and pragmatic approach to using Office 365 Groups. Topics include: planning their introduction, integration with SharePoint Team Sites, the impact on directories, planning governance, and anything else that comes to mind.

B308 - B309, 12:30pm - 1:45pm
In order to implement an information protection solution, you first need to understand what kind of information you need to protect; identifying your most critical assets is the first step in the data protection journey. This session offers a deep dive into classification, labeling and protection technologies included within Microsoft Azure Information Protection and how they solve the broader problem of identification and protection of sensitive data.

...and I'm still trying to decide which sessions to attend Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.  There are so many to choose from and I wish I could attend them all.

One great thing about this year's schedule builder is that there is a new feature where you can add a session to a playlist.  So, if there are multiple sessions that you want to attend occurring at the same time, it lets you prioritize - the absolute most important session to you at a particular time you can put on your schedule, and the others at that time you can put on your playlist and then come back to them to listen to the session recording later.

Enjoy the conference and I hope to see you around Atlanta.
